3 Facts About Wholefood Cakes (Plus 3 Tips for a perfect Birthday cake)

Because dessert should make you feel good, not guilty

Cutting the cake is always a big moment at a party. Everyone leans in for that first slice.

But most cakes you'll find at a shop, a bakery or on a catering menu are made with a lot more sugar, additives and refined flour than you'd think.

A wholefood cake is different. It's made with real ingredients, things like almonds, dates, eggs and fruit, instead of processed shortcuts. Here are 3 facts you probably didn't know about the difference, plus 3 tips for choosing the right one for your next birthday.

3 Facts: Regular Cake vs Wholefood Cake

1. One Slice Can Have More Sugar Than You Should Eat in a Whole Day

Regular cake: one slice of a normal party cake can have 30 to 60 grams of sugar. That's up to 15 teaspoons, in one slice. The World Health Organization recommends adults have no more than about 25 grams of added sugar a day, roughly 6 teaspoons. So one slice of regular cake can use up your whole day's sugar allowance, or more, before you've even had lunch.

Wholefood cake: ours is naturally sweetened with dates, fruit, honey or maple syrup. Much less sugar, still sweet.

2. Most "Cakes" aren't Really Food, They're a Factory Recipe

Regular cake: most packaged and shop bought cakes count as ultra processed food, meaning they're made with refined flour, vegetable oils and preservatives, not usually home made. In fact, over half of what Australians eat, 56%, is now ultra processed food, and a store bought cake usually fits right into that group.

Wholefood cake: Uses real ingredients! You should be able to read every ingredient out loud and know exactly what it is.

3. Here's the Surprising One: Not All Flour Affects You the Same Way

Did you know plain white flour sits at almost the same level as pure table sugar on the scale that measures how fast a food affects your blood sugar? Almond flour, for example, on the other hand, barely moves the needle.

Regular cake: Made with white flour, so it hits your system fast. Quick sugar high, then a flat, cranky slump an hour later.

Wholefood cake: Made with almond flour or brown rice, it's digested slower. Steadier energy, so your guests are still up and enjoying the party later on, instead of ready to go home early with a stomach ache.

3 Tips for Choosing a Wholefood Cake for a Birthday

  1. Check the ingredients, not just the label. Look for real foods like almonds, dates, eggs and olive oil, not a long list of additives. Choose ingredients you know!
  2. Check what's actually sweetening it. Fruit, honey or maple in sensible amounts beats a "sugar-free" cake that's really just full of artificial sweeteners. A lot of trendy bakers fill their cakes with artificial sweeteners to fit in the "sugar free" category.
  3. Ask about allergies before you order. Check labels and read carefully before ordering. Wholefood cakes will be much more likely to fit your specific dietary.

Real cake. Real ingredients. Real celebration.
